What is your method of preventing WhatsApp to automatically store all the media files in your phone gallery?

I always have a full storage due to group chats. I am aware of a setting to it, but it appears to bug itself every so often following updates. Does anyone in the community techzeel have a permanent solution to this or how they can manage media in a more effective manner?
